INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENGLISH LITERATURE
CALL FOR PAPERS
ENGLISH LITERARY STUDIES OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE
November 4-5, 2014
BACKGROUND
English has been spoken as first language not only by British, American, and Australian people, but also by people from “Outside the Circle”. Even most of Commonwealth countries use English as second language; Malaysia, to give example, uses English as compulsory academic language in classrooms. In its turn, many writers from “Outside the Circle” write literary works in English. This arises problems in English Literary Studies “Outside the Circle”. Is the definition of “English” which is limited to the one used in Britain, America, and Australia still relevant? Is it acceptable for English Departments of universities from “Outside the Circle”, like Indonesia, to include literary works written in English by writers from “Outside the Circle” into their studies? Those questions have been haunting us for years.
To discuss the problems, English Department of Sebelas Maret University would like to conduct a conference on English literary studies which will become The Second Conference on English Literary Studies held by English Department of Sebelas Maret University (the first was conducted in November, 2010). We invite teachers/ lecturers, researchers and those who are keen on observing English literary studies to share their experiences and insights about English literary studies in universities “Outside the Circle”. We do expect to obtain valuable inputs from this conference to develop English literary studies, not only in Sebelas Maret University, but also in other universities all over the world.
